Checklist

How to Know Whether Your Idea Is Ready to Be Built

Building is the expensive part of a startup. Before you pay for it, in cash or in equity, check whether the idea has earned it. This is the list we use when founders apply to The Loop Ventures.

An idea that sounds good is not yet validated

Friends are kind. AI assistants are helpful and tend to build on what you tell them. Both can make an idea feel stronger than it is. Validation comes from people who have the problem and nothing to gain from being nice to you.

The checklist

1. You can name the person who has the problem

Not “small businesses”. A specific kind of person, in a specific situation, whom you know how to find.

2. They are already trying to solve it

People with a real problem are doing something about it: a spreadsheet, a messaging group, a competitor they complain about. If nobody is doing anything, the problem may not hurt enough.

3. Someone has committed something

In order of strength:

  • They said it sounds interesting. This is worth very little.
  • They joined a waitlist.
  • They gave you their time for a pilot.
  • They signed a letter of intent.
  • They paid.

4. You have delivered the value by hand at least once

If you can solve the problem manually for one customer, you understand it. You also know which part is worth turning into a product.

5. You know how the first hundred users will find you

A product nobody hears about fails, however good it is. Contacts, a community, a channel or a partner in your industry.

6. You have an advantage

Experience, relationships or distribution that someone else starting today would not have.

7. You are committed

Full-time, with something of your own at risk. A product team working on your idea needs a founder who is there every week.

8. The business can grow

If everything goes well, is it a business that can generate serious revenue?

How to read your result

Your situation What it means
Points 1 to 4 are missing Too early to build. Keep validating.
You have 1 to 4, not 5 and 6 Build small, and work on distribution at the same time.
You have most of the list Ready to build. Choose how.

If you are not ready yet

That is normal, and it is cheaper to find out now. Spend the next weeks on conversations and manual tests. A simple prototype made with AI or no-code tools can help you show the idea. See what those tools can and cannot do.

If you are ready

Decide how the product will get built. We describe the steps in from an app idea to a product, and the options for founders on a budget in how to build an MVP when you cannot afford a full development team.

What The Loop Ventures looks for

We are a tech-for-equity venture studio, and we evaluate companies the way an investor would. What weighs most is founder-market fit, prior validation and commitment. After that: commercial capacity, the size of the market and a clean cap table. The full scorecard is on how it works.
